Green Rating System

Green Cricket is committed to producing products of the highest quality that are safe for the environment as well as for human health. We do this by adopting and adhering to rigorous standards and ensuring that all of our suppliers, contractors, and employees continually meet these criteria. Green Cricket is committed to providing transparency on levels of environmental stewardship and human health sensitivity for each product, and disclosing this information on our labelling and on our website.

Criteria for our product formulations as well as selection of our suppliers cover both the supplier/manufacturer details and their products. We look not only at the ingredient and supply chain information but also to the manufacturer itself and its commitment to environmental and health standards.

In addition to an overall assurance of quality for Green Cricket products, we list a notation symbol which provides a more specific indication of compliance with our criteria. The special symbols or “marks of recognition” will be visible on the product ordering pages.

Ingredients

What goes into developing a product is critical to determining its environmental and human health impact. Our products have the following characteristics:

  • Natural or Organic (if certified organic then a designation)
  • Biodegradable
  • Excludes SLS, SLES, Parabens, Mineral Oils, PEG’s, Artificial Fragrance and Colors
  • Excludes Gluten
  • Absence of animal testing

Packaging

One of the more visible criteria of a product’s environmental contribution is its packaging. To save costs and limit their footprint, we reduce or eliminate product packaging. Green Cricket packaging meets the following characteristics:

  • Minimalist
  • Recycled, recyclable or biodegradable
  • Sustainable

Process

Probably the least visible of the environmental criteria is the product development process. The majority of products go through an extensive series of stages before they enter the market. We look at all stages of product development in determining how sustainable the process is, and include the following:

  • Commitment & leadership of the company to environmental stewardship (sustainability, product, packaging, manufacturing process)
  • Ethical and fair trade manufacturing practices
  • External relevant company certifications (e.g. ISO14001. ISO9001)
  • Place of manufacture (distance product travels from source to the Toronto warehouse)
  • Emissions monitoring
  • Carbon footprint considerations (energy consumption of processes, etc.)

Certification

We believe in the value of third party compliance and assurance reviewers and regulators. They exert deep experience in establishing and ensuring that organizations meet market needs and expectations. There are a number of environmentally related certifications that we highlight on our website and on our labels:

  • Recognized logo is preferred – may be product type specific (e.g EcoLogo, EcoCert, FSC, USDA Organic, Canadian Food Inspection Agency Organic Council of Ontario, Fair Trade, etc.)
  • Certification is valuable as a 3rd party verification of claims

Distance to Market

A Product’s distance to market has a direct link with its carbon footprint. There are a number of standards to look to determine whether an organization is within reasonable distance of the market it serves. We use the popular 100 mile benchmark. Therefore as a Toronto-based business, we measure all suppliers, product inputs and manufacturing distances by our distance criteria:

  • Distance of all product inputs to Green Cricket warehouse less than 100 miles
  • Products are manufactured locally
